Dental Air Abrasion
At Royal York Dental, we use air abrasion in place of a dental drill to perform a variety of dental procedures.
What is Air Abrasion?
Air abrasion is a drill-less technique used by our dentists to remove early, small areas of tooth decay and to perform other procedures. It can also be used for tooth repairs such as cracks, fractures or to replace old fillings.
Why air abrasion?
Air abrasion is used to strengthen bonding materials to teeth. It can help the dentist to conserve the surface of your natural teeth.
How does air abrasion work?
Air abrasion uses a high-pressure stream of tiny particles on your teeth. As these particles make contact with the tooth's surface, they create a surface suitable for bonding materials to adhere.
What can air abrasion be used for?
Air abrasion is commonly used to prepare your teeth for composites, also known as white fillings. It can also help repair discoloured teeth by removing old stains. Air abrasion can also be used to fix cracks. chips or fractures that are currently existing in teeth.
In the case of old fillings, bridges and broken crowns, your dentist may use air abrasion to help repair those areas. Your dentist may also use air abrasion to prepare your teeth for various cosmetic services.
